Global trade is undergoing a significant transformation, driven not only by digitalisation and decarbonisation, but also by poly-crises, leading to changes in trade policies. Challenges faced by exporters that hamper export performance can be addressed through innovative government export strategies that support structural transformation. Modern export strategies are based on sound analyses, follow an ecosystem approach with sustained public-private collaboration, are linked to innovation and climate policies, and focus on measurable impact.

Prof Andreas Klasen spoke about his research findings and previous strategy projects for governments around the world and the needs of exporters with Kathryn Boyd from the british Department for Business and Trade and Sandra Halver-Simons from the internationally operating SMS group.

Using the example of Great Britains strategy "Made in the UK. Sold to the world" elements emerged during the discussion that could be of interest to Germany. These include development with the involvement of the business community, an unsparing initial analysis in comparison with other countries (benchmark analysis) and the setting of measurable impact targets. In the UK, for example, the latter is branded "Race to the trillion" - a clear growth target for exports.
